“Success is a by-product of defining who you are as an individual and finding the meaning in your life.” ~ Chad Hennings
We are not solely defined by what we do, however what we do depicts the very essence of what we have willed to be. How you define success is how you will live your life and how you live your life defines the legacy you will leave. Our success in life boils down to our definitions three words identity (who we are.), purpose (why we do…), and vision (what we want).
Your identity is the fundamental definition
of who you are. The base of your identity
lies beyond yourself, it lies in Christ. As David reminisced in Psalms 139:14(NIV),
“I am fearfully and wonderfully made…” In Matthew 20:27(NIV)
Jesus said,“...whoever wants to become
great among you must be your servant…” And John 15:5 (NIV) states, “I am the
vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear
much fruit…” In
his book Purpose Driven Life, Richard
“Rick” Duane Warren summarized all of this by writing, “It is
only in God that we discover our origin, our identity, our meaning, our
purpose, our significance, and our destiny.”[1]
Your purpose is established in your identity. Purpose is the driving force that motivates you to action. It is what impels a state change from where you currently are, to where you want to be. As Viktor Frankl put it, “Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life. Everyone must carry out a concrete assignment that demands fulfillment. Therein he cannot be replaced, nor can his life be repeated. Thus everyone’s task is as unique as his specific opportunity to implement it.”[2]
Your vision is the projection of your future; it is synonymous with your identity because, “Vision is beyond your resources.” ~ Mark Batterson. Vision is just a noun but when you envision your goals and aspirations these ‘dreams’ will come to life. Your vision allows you to see the gap between where you are and where you want to be. The more clearly you define your identity, purpose, and vision; the easier it will become to truly attain your goals. “The world makes way for the man who knows where he is going.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
It’s amazing what you can do once you know who you are, where you are and where you want to go.

“15 But if
serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day
whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the
Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But
as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” ~ NIV Joshua
